Between Earth and Sky nasce dall’incontro tra il paesaggio della Sardegna, l’artista Elizabeth Yochim e lo sguardo fotografico di Domenico Cortese. Al Nuraghe Piscu il corpo dell’artista entra in relazione con la pietra, la luce e la memoria millenaria del luogo. Le fotografie non vogliono spiegare il rito, ma raccontare il dialogo tra corpo e paesaggio, presenza e memoria, luce e oscurità.

Between Earth and Sky
Between Earth and Sky est nàschidu dae s’incontru intre su paesàgiu de sa Sardigna, s’artista Elizabeth Yochim e sa manera mea de abbaidare e de contare cun sa fotografia.
Durante sa performance in su Nuraghe Piscu, su corpu de s’artista non ocupaiat ebia s’ispàtziu: intraiat in relatzione cun su logu. Tocaiat sas pedras, si moviat intre sa lughe e s’umbra e pariat ascurtare sa memòria istòrica e simbòlica de cussu logu.
Apo bidu alternare làgrimas, allegria, fortza e, a pustis, silèntziu. In intro de su nuraghe, su corpu si faghiat agiumai immòbile, immersu in una lughe essentziale chi, a bortas, pariat isparire. In foras, cussa matessi presèntzia beniat investida dae sa lughe forte de sa Sardigna, dae s’oro de sos campos e dae su birde de sa vegetatzione.
A bortas, su corpu de s’artista pariat dominare su paesàgiu; in àteros momentos, imbetzes, pariat chi si mescaiat cun issu.
Sas fotografias meas non cherent ispiegare su ritu, e mancu dare un’interpretatzione definitiva. Cherent, imbetzes, sarbare su mistèriu e contare sa relatzione intre corpu, paesàgiu e memòria.

Between Earth and Sky was born from the encounter between the landscape of Sardinia, the artist Elizabeth Yochim, and my photographic gaze.
During the performance at Nuraghe Piscu, the artist’s body did not simply occupy the space; it entered into a relationship with it. She touched the stones, moved through light and shadow, and seemed to listen to the historical and symbolic memory of the place.
I witnessed moments of tears, joy, energy, and then silence. Inside the nuraghe, the body became almost motionless, immersed in an essential light that at times nearly disappeared. Outside, that same presence was suddenly surrounded by the powerful light of Sardinia, the golden fields and the green vegetation.
At times, the artist’s body seemed to dominate the landscape; at others, it appeared to be completely absorbed by it.
My photographs do not seek to explain the ritual or offer a definitive interpretation of it. They seek instead to preserve its mystery and to explore the relationship between body, landscape and memory.
Each photograph becomes a threshold: a suspended moment between presence and absence, light and darkness, life and memory.

Between Earth and Sky nasce dall’incontro tra il paesaggio della Sardegna, l’artista Elizabeth Yochim e il mio sguardo fotografico.
Durante la performance al Nuraghe Piscu, il corpo dell’artista non occupava semplicemente lo spazio, ma entrava in relazione con esso. Toccava la pietra, attraversava la luce e l’ombra, sembrava ascoltare la memoria storica e simbolica del luogo.
Ho visto alternarsi il pianto, la gioia, l’energia e poi il silenzio. All’interno del nuraghe il corpo diventava quasi immobile, immerso in una luce essenziale e talvolta quasi assente. All’esterno, quella stessa presenza veniva investita dalla luce intensa della Sardegna, dal dorato dei campi e dal verde della vegetazione.
Il corpo dell’artista sembrava a volte dominare il paesaggio e, in altri momenti, esserne completamente assorbito.
Le mie fotografie non vogliono spiegare il rito né offrirne un’interpretazione definitiva. Vogliono conservarne il mistero e raccontare la relazione tra corpo, paesaggio e memoria.
Ogni fotografia diventa una soglia: un istante sospeso tra presenza e assenza, luce e oscurità, vita e memoria.

A photographic and performative exploration of Nuraghe Piscu in Sardinia - a megalithic stone structure suspended between earth and sky, memory and myth, descent and transformation.
Created through an embodied encounter with the prehistoric landscape of Sardinia, the exhibition traces thresholds between the human and more-than-human worlds through image, ritual, movement, and text. This exhibition marks the first exhibition of Domenico Cortese's work in the United States.
